What do the fare class letters (K, U, Y, etc.) stand for?
Question:
In particular on Delta, certain coach class tickets can be upgraded to first class and some cannot. The gate agent will usually announce that for example, K fares can be upgraded and Y fares cannot. Are the definition for these letters universal across all airlines? Where can a guide defining each letter be found on the web or elsewhere? If they’re not universal, I’d be interested in getting the table for Delta since their website does not have it or buries it somewhere. What fare does U represent?

No, and confusingly, some airlines use the same letter for very different classes of travel. The only ones that are generally universal are P = premium/int’l first class F = first class A = discounted FC (or upgrade inventory) J = int’l/premium business class C = business class or discounted business class D = discounted business class Y = full fare economy on BA, R = Concorde Where can a guide defining each letter be found on the web or elsewhere?
in general only a few codes are universal. Generally, Y = full fare economy. B a slightly restricted economy fare, M a more restricted one. Other subclasses, depending on airline, are V, K, U, L, T On some airlines, O, I, X, G represent upgrade or award inventory If they’re not universal, I’d be interested in getting the table for Delta since their website does not have it or buries it somewhere. A cheaper restricted econmy fare. Along with L (LUser fares) and later T (insULT) these cannot be upgraded.

Except when it’s the unreserved walk-up fare for a shuttle like BOS-LGA or LGA-DCA. Along with L (LUser fares) and later (insULT) these cannot be upgraded.
Indeed, since shuttle flights are single class.

I actually just saw my daughter’s airline ticket an hour or so ago and her fare was classified as U. She is an unacompanied minor and the fare was discounted. This may be of some assistance.

No such beast exists. If they’re not universal, I’d be interested in getting the table for Delta since their website does not have it or buries it somewhere. What fare does U represent?
Quite a few OneWorld carriers use "U" as the class for award Business Class – so either business class award travel or for business class upgrade travel. ===== Dave There are 10 types of people – those who understand binary and those who don’t.

There is not universal harmony on codes with maybe a couple excepts: F almost always equates full first class Y almost always equates full, unrestricted coach class J almost always equates business class. Rich — Visit America’s Aviation Headquarters: www.usaviation.com
