I’ve snucked into business class in just about every flight I have taken (*). But usually, I am told to continue walking to wards the back of the plane, so I never stick around for very long
(*) Except in Australia in smaller airports where they have 2 airstairs and I board from the back of the plane.
Response:
firstly: it’s a rare event that the business class isn’t "full enough."
Not always; I frequently do BRU ZRH on Saturday and sometimes we 1,2 or 3 persons only…. lovely secondly: the flight attendants know who’s seated in each seat, and they know which seats are supposed to be empty. they have no problem escorting you to the seat listed on your boarding pass.

Anways, I had thought about going to www.itn.net the night before (maybe before the seat map is in airport control) and look at the business class seat map for that flight. And if not full enough, I might "sneak" in when I board the plane (I try to do it late) and sit in one of those unoccupied seats. Anyone tried it before?

Specially with CX, the FA all have names of BC passengers in their specific seats so they can address you by your last name I can’t think of any airline that I’ve been on that doesnt do this. Air Canada doesn’t, at least not to my knowledge.
I’ve flown AC business class fairly frequently, and have always been addressed by my name (though mispronounced). ;-) — "Having a childhood is overrated." -Stef Maruch

Maybe they just give up on my (rather lengthy) surname, but I can’t recall every being addressed by name in AC J class. By my count, I’ve flown eleven legs in this category in the last year and a bit…

I had about 7 segments in the last 2 years in AC J class, never been addressed by name. Out of the 3 CP J segments, only once. CX has fairly decent service.. gee, I wouldn’t say no to a free Y tix to HKG. Take it and enjoy it. If you were caught sneaking into BC on a free ticket.. the mind boggles… I think even Erik wouldn’t have a problem with the response…
If their lounge is anything to go by, they are *quite* strict about J vs. F. BKK and HKG (at least) have separate lounges, and although on one flight I was upgraded from Business to First Class, I was only permitted to use the business class portion of the lounge at Chek Lap Kok.

Air Canada doesn’t, at least not to my knowledge. You’re quite often lucky if you get called "sir" or "madam" much less by your last name (unless it’s a Maritime-based crew 8-)). They no doubt have a manifest though…

And if not full enough, I might "sneak" in when I board the plane (I try to do it late) and sit in one of those unoccupied seats. Anyone tried it before? You can try, but I’ve seen BC FA’s embarrass the hell out of those who tried. A similar experience, also on BA; A passenger had a coach ticket, but found one of those BA "First" ticket jacket. He hung around in first trying to pick out an empty seat, but clearly did not belong there. BTW, how did he clearly not belong there?
Well, it’s a gut feeling, of course, but the hesitancy in picking a seat, then having to move when someone else claimed the seat, a generally nervous behaviour — lot’s of looking around and moving to the other "aisle" when the FA entered the FC cabin. "Hung around" is the operative phrase, as opposed to going to a seat and settling in. I think most people in the cabin were aware that something wasn’t quite right. (It wasn’t appearance if that’s what you meant. Just the behaviour, tentative as it was.) Ken H

The whole sneaking into business class wouldn’t work on any airline worth its salt as the FA’s do a head count before take-off to tally with the manifest. Thus if C has 45 pax listed and 46 pax counted, that could get pretty embarassing pretty quick. CX has fairly decent service.. gee, I wouldn’t say no to a free Y tix to HKG. Take it and enjoy it. What kind of pea-brain goes from winning a free trans-Pacific ticket to asking perfect strangers for advice on scamming a business class upgrade? Mr. Wong, have some shame. Go away. Or, better yet, send the ticket to me and I’ll gladly fly free in coach.
Indeed. As jaded as I am, I still can’t believe that this guy can be such a pig, to not be happy with a free transPacific…. Hell, I was happy when CX gave me a free JFK-YVR. For free YVR-HKG I’d gladly sit in one of the FA seats and forego all meal/beverage service. I guess Mr. Wong, if handed a $50 note, would complain that it’s not $100. Ed R.

I have won a free airline ticket from YVR to HKG on CX and unfortuantely the free ticket is in economy class. He hung around in first trying to pick out an empty seat, but clearly did not belong there. He also tried to convince the FA that he had a FC ticket, but the FA would not bite. While the FA did not go out of her way to embarress the pax, he was, none the less. Ken H

Specially with CX, the FA all have names of BC passengers in their specific seats so they can address you by your last name. I believe this list is generated just prior to departure, thus it will be most up-to-date. You can try, but I’ve seen BC FA’s embarrass the hell out of those who tried. Last time I’ve seen this, a passenger was waving a photocopied letter from his T.A. which said along the lines that he should be upgraded to BC. The Lead FA (Purser ?) had no problem with this, all he asked for was his credit card number, so if the passenger didn’t actually deserve a BC seat, he’ll be billed by CX for the difference. This was a HKG-YYZ flight, the one-way full-fare BC seat would be fairly pricey. The passenger backed down… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have won a free airline ticket from YVR to HKG on CX and unfortuantely the free ticket is in economy class. Or I can always use my credit card and reserve a one-way segment from YVR-HKG and cancel the reservations last minute (CX gives advanced seat assignments to F, C, J passengers) and not pick up the ticket from the airport counter. Then when I board instead of sitting in the Y class seat, I would sit in the J class seat (lower deck seems easier) that I had previously reserved by canceled. Anyone can give me opinions.
