Looking to rent at Republic or ISP

Question:

Hi folks, Can anyone recommend a good place to rent a Cessna 172 at either Republic or MacArthur on Long Island?  Also, if there’s an instructor you’d recommend at either of those two airports, that’d be great, too (I doubt there’s an FBO that would let me rent without first flying with an instructor). I’m hoping to do the Hudson River Tour (or some other tour around Manhattan) when I’m on Long Island later this month. E-mail responses are preferred. In fact, if you mail me responses, I’ll compile the results and post a summary. Thanks, Jon

When on Long Island, go to Nassau Flyers at Republic airport in Farmingdale. Their phone number is 516-454-0626.

Keep in mind that Republic has a LANDING FEE, I don’t know about MacArthur. I was there over the summer, and was charged a landing fee.  It wasn’t much, but I was really pissed when they sent me an additional bill for a landing which occurred AFTER the tower was closed, when I took some local relatives up for a spin around the pattern!  I figure I’ll make them send me a few more bills before I’ll pay it, since it probably costs them about as much as the fee to process the paperwork.  I know, childish… – Len Fishler – PP-ASEL-IA Centurion N3784Y RHV

Try checking the Airport Facilities Directory (AFD) before flying at an unfamiliar field. It might even save your life.

Are you implying that I didn’t?  I most certainly did, and was aware of the landing fee.  The surprise was in the application of it to a trip around the pattern, not to my arrival.  I have been to other airports with landing fees before, and was only charged for my arrival landing.  Especially galling was the charge after the tower was closed, since this means I used NO services in accomplishing the landing.  I suspect they must record the CTAF since I saw no one recording my tail number, and no one told me of the charge, and the FBO was unattended.  I DID announce my closed traffic circuit on the CTAF. – Len Fishler – PP-ASEL-IA Centurion N3784Y RHV

The landing fee doesn’t have anything to do with the control tower at federal CT’s.  There’s a high probability it doesn’t pay for the runway either.  It really goes to operational expense which you certainly didn’t make use of. _Ron

I believe that landing fees are used at congested airports to help deter general aviation pilots from doing touch and gos.  Even after the tower closes, these fees are maintaned to continue to raise revenue.  If you want to practice go to an airport that does not enforce landing fees, if you’re that cheap!

But I’ve heard (rumor) that late, late at night you can sometimes get the controllers at SFO to let you do a T&G for free… -Rob —– Silicon Graphics, Inc.          Phone: 415-390-1673 2011 N.
